Chauhan became well known as the lead vocalist for Silk Route which was formed in 1996 with members Kem Trivedi and Kenny Puri.Their debut album, Boondein, was released in 1998 and featured the hit IndiPop song "Dooba Dooba". Chauhan's playback career in Bollywood began in 2002 when he sang "Pehli Nazar Mein Dari Thi" in the movie Road. Chauhan gained credibility in the industry for songs such as "Khoon Chala" from the 2006 film Rang De Basanti and "Tum Se Hi" from the 2007 film Jab We Met.

In 2010, he won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer for "Masakali".

In addition to film playback singing, Chauhan has sung many advertisement jingles for products including Alpenlibe, Parachute, Wheel (detergent), Nescafe, Hippo Munchies, Vicks Vapor Rub, Alchemist & Maruti Suzuki Alto (2011). In 2013 he sang a song "Jad Se Judien" for the advertisement of L'Oreal Paris India.

In 2011, he featured in the third episode of The Dewarists collaborating with Indian Ocean for the song called "Maaya". He was also featured on MTV Unplugged (India) in the same year. In 2013 he sang a song "Jad Se Judien" for the advertisement of L'Oreal Paris India.

In 2018, Chauhan sang "Saale Sapne" for the film Pad Man, composed by Amit Trivedi and written by Kausar Munir. He sang "Rozana" with Tulsi Kumar for the film Phir Se composed by Jeet Ganguli.Chauhan has collaborated with Imtiaz Ali for ‘Hafiz Hafiz’ composed by Niladri Kumar from the film, ‘Laila Majnu’.
